Feb 23 Update
Hello!
One important thing to mention this week:
Zoo Field Trip: First grade is excited to announce that we will be taking a field trip to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Thursday, May 9th! As a first step, we are looking for chaperones!!
The details are as follows:
- Date: Thursday, May 9th
- Arrival Time: Chaperones will need to arrive at Hopewell by 9:30 am
- Conclusion: Chaperones will be back at the school at the conclusion of the field trip by 2:30 pm
- Price: $5 per chaperone (and will be $5 per student as well). If you have a zoo membership, you will be able to provide your zoo membership number from your membership card instead of paying the $5.
- Background Check: Chaperones must complete a required district volunteer background check, which takes no more than 5 minutes to complete but must be completed ASAP to get it processed in a timely manner. You can click here to complete the volunteer background check.
As a chaperone you will be responsible for a few students while exploring the zoo so we ask that you not bring additional children (example: siblings) with you. With the group of children you are chaperoning you will walk with them around the zoo, carrying their lunches in a bag/backpack and check in with the whole class at appointed times.
We would love to have you join us as a chaperone!
Please let me know via email if you are willing to chaperone and let me know both if you have a zoo membership currently and if you were able to complete the volunteer background check or need any assistance in completing it.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
Wendy
ps - As a gem jar celebration, the class picked "Change Your Name Day." It's one of my favorites!! Each student can change their name for the day if they would like - we had Link, Barbie, Bubble Gum, Shimmer, Captain Blackbeard, Hello Kitty, Mr. Kick and others all present today! : ) Ask your child if they recall their friends' "names" for today!
Here are 2 students (picture above and below) sharing their dog opinion work with their classmates! We each picked a dog from the Franklin County Dog Shelter that needs to be adopted. A big thank you to Mrs. McCreary, reading support teacher at Hopewell, for organizing this initiative across all 1st grade classrooms and with the Franklin County Dog Shelter!
We talked about general opinions why people should adopt a dog (for cuddles, for good health to walk with, to protect you, etc.) as well as specific opinions based on our chosen dogs (he's young with a lot of energy, she lets you dress her up in a bandana, etc.). Then we wrote our opinions! The first grade standard is to state your opinion, give 1-2 reasons why and provide a conclusion. The students did EXCELLENT with this project! We will be giving our writings to the Franklin County Dog Shelter to hang up by each of the dogs to help convince potential owners to adopt these dogs!!
Below are the 17 awesome opinions of our 1st grade class! Students will be bringing home a copy of their writing as well to share with you!
