Nov 17 Update

 Hello!

Please see below for our week in pictures and explanations including time with our special guests as we explored the Korean language! As a friendly reminder, we will not have school on Wed, Thurs or Fri of next week. We are looking forward to some special activities on Mon and Tues!

***Monday is Toy Pajama Day! Students may bring 1 toy to share during morning exploration time and may come in their pajamas!***

If you have any questions, please reach out.

Thanks!

Wendy

As a writing workshop opener this week, we had a LOT of fun doing partner sharing with "Would You Rather" questions. These questions are great for 1st graders - they all have opinions AND they can all articulate why they picked the one they picked! Try some "would you rather" questions at home....great conversation starters! Below, we are doing a Would You Rather partner share.

In math this week, we focused on counting larger quantities (to 50). Below, we are doing "inventory bags" where students show the amount in at least 2 ways. Many chose to represent these bigger numbers on a number chart, number line, tens frame and with equations. We discussed how the strategy of "drawing a picture" wasn't necessarily the quickest with these larger numbers! These inventory sheets should have come home on Thursday for you to see your student's thinking.

As an example of a writing workshop focused on opinions, we read the above book and learned the MANY reasons why the frog did NOT want to become big! We fully understood his opinion by the end as well as "reasons why" he holds that opinion. We talked about whether we'd like to be big! Students came up with reasons why it would be good and not-so-good to be a baby, a kid or an adult! They picked one and wrote about it! Below is the outcome from a quick graph with tally marks that we did. I am keeping these papers of their opinions as an example of their first round of opinion writing, but know that these will come home eventually! Some of my favorites were: I want to be an adult so I can drive to any restaurant I want. I want to be an adult to

It was a beautiful sunny November day on Tuesday! Here's some pictures below of the students at recess soaking up the sun!

Above, a student is teaching us fruit and dessert names in Korean!

Sharing the Korean flag (above) and reading a book in Korean (below)!

Mrs. Belock, a friend of mine and EL teacher, will be coming into our room to work with students in small groups. Here she is reading a book to us as a whole class and donated a Pete the Cate stuffed animal to our room! Yay! Fun!

We LOVED this book. It was new to the students and new to me as a book recommendation from Mrs. Hansen. So, we decided to take a selfie with it to send to her thank her for the great recommendation! Thumbs up to sharing book ideas!!

And finally, a few pictures from our Friday afternoon fun reading a book in Korean and learning how to use chopsticks to end our exploration of the Korean language this week! Thank you Miss Hannah and Mr Isaac for coming in and sharing your knowledge with us! It was great!! Students are bringing home chopsticks and a "trainer" piece to practice using them as well as some Korean candy to try if it's ok with their parents at home! : )
