In writing, we first focused on facts vs. opinions and how to tell the difference. The students did great with this! See below for fall sort on fact and opinion.

We then moved solely to opinion writing later in the week. To align with Election Day and explore character traits of favorite characters, we first talked about some of our favorite characters in first grade. These characters have "outside traits" (like pointy ears, black fur, etc.) and "inside traits" (like kindness, humor and perseverance). In the picture below, we are sharing some of the favorite traits about SkippyJon Jones, the Pigeon and Pete the Cat.

After looking fully at each character, it was time for our official vote on the favorite character in room 146. By only 1 vote, the Pigeon won narrowly, with SkippyJon Jones just 1 vote behind.

This week, we explored the Hindi language. The 2 students in the pictures below are teaching us how to greet each other, and we also explored colors and numbers. We also enjoyed a brain break with some great, upbeat dancing and singing in Hindi.

On Friday, our focus turned to Diwali. Those that celebrate Diwali had lots of first-person stories to tell and facts to share about what Diwali looks like within their families. As we have students that also speak Telugu, Punjabi and Marathi, we started to have great conversations that will tie into our Social Studies content area of maps regarding the many languages of India and where, within the country, they are spoken.

Next week, we move to an exploration of the Korean language.

Finally, in math this week, we focused on the number line as a strategy to help us in adding and subtracting. As seen below, we learned to "hop" on the number line forward and backward. It was particularly challenging when the addition and subtraction signs changed on the same page of problems, but mathematicians observe and are precise, so we talked about really paying attention to the equation to see if it was addition or subtraction. Below shows one of the worksheets we did using the number line to solve equations.
