Oct 6 Update
Hello!
A few important links for our update this week:
Here is the link for Hopewell spirit wear if you are interested in ordering.
Please click here if you'd like to come and read to the class, volunteer or share something with us from your culture, work or life experience! I'm happy to chat with you about ideas and/or provide picture book suggestions (which I'd have here in the class for you) if you'd prefer to come in and read to the class.
Please click here if you haven't yet signed up for a conference time.
We are going to be exploring different languages and cultures in Room 146! The students and I are super excited! We have to still map it all out, as much of it is student-led and created. However, we do know that next week, we will be exploring Japanese! Two of our classroom friends speak Japanese, and we look forward to learning from them. I'm also going to be working on leveraging some Japanese-speaking staff in the building, but if you have any interest in coming in regarding the Japanese culture, please reach out b/c next week would be a great week for it! By my next update, we should have a plan as to when we will be exploring which languages, and I will of course share that with you in case you would like to come in and share anything on a particular week!
Please see below for some pictures and explanations of what we are working on in class!
Thanks,
Wendy
Hands in the air! Everyone enjoying this Danny Go brain break called The Wiggle Dance. It's a catchy tune!
Miss Karla led a pumpkin activity today!
In Phonics, we spent 1 week on each of the vowels: a, e, i, o, u! I'm so proud of the work students have done on segmenting words, hearing and recording sounds and being brave writers that transfer our phonics work to writing workshop! Today I introduced a new "under the easel" choice - Snakes and Ladders - where students read CVC words and work their way up to the top! They seemed to really enjoy it.
We have 1 final week where we review all of the vowels together before moving to our next Phonics 95 large topic.
We also introduced the idea of "doubles" and changed our Capture 4 Game choice to Capture 4 Doubles.
Here is the calendar for this month. Part, Part, Whole still remains a focus in our morning conversation. You can see the pattern starting to develop here. 0 red + 4 green = 4 total apples, 1 red + 3 green = 4 apples, etc. We are representing them in number bonds as well as equations. We also quite enjoy taking our "left hand" with 1 part and our "right hand" with the 2nd part and bringing them together as a "unicorn horn" whole. Perhaps the kids can show you want I mean!
Thanks for sharing your students with me this week! It was a fun and busy week of learning!
