Oct 27 Update

Hi!

What a fun and FULL week we have had! Please see below for pumpkin fun, the cardboard museum tour, our special guest to teach us about the Arabic language and our FUN harvest party! It's GREAT to be in grade 1!!!

Lots of pictures and explanations below! Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

Wendy

Time to make the face on our pumpkin!

This is the result from scooping out the insides. We put it aside in the morning to get back out during math in the afternoon!!

Ta-Dah! This is Edgar - after a heated class vote!

In math, we sorted all of the seeds out of Edgar and explored all of the ways we could count the seeds.

This group choose to count "faster" (mathematicians are efficient) by putting the seeds in groups of 2 and then counting by two's.

This group decided to group the seeds by 10 and count by 10's - we found this to be even faster than counting by 2's!

Adding the lights for the final finished look!

In math, we used fall wind up toys to race which one went farther as we wrapped up our conversation in math on nonstandard measurement. We measured how far each wind up toy went in unifix cubes.

Our Arabic bilingual aide, Saja Wajdi, came in as a special guest to work, alongside a student that also speaks Arabic, to teach us the Arabic alphabet and read us a familiar book in Arabic!

We went to the cardboard game shop and museum put on by the 3rd graders today!

Next week, we will move to opinion writing. So, today, we did just a quick, fun opinion - which hat should Edgar where for Halloween! The goal was to write which hat and 2 reasons why each student thought that hat was the hat he should wear. As you can see, the sparkly hat won! We will circle back to see that that was actually stating an opinion and reasons to back up our opinion when we get deeper into opinions next week.

And finally, some pictures from our Harvest Party this afternoon. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who made this FUN party happen!!!!
