Oct 17 Update

 Hello!

As a reminder, there is no school for students on Friday and Monday. I will look forward to seeing them on Tues, Oct 24th. Enjoy the long weekend!

Language Weekly Focus: This week, we enjoyed exploring American Sign Language. We learned so many signs, many that help us in the classroom such as bathroom, water, more, learn, doesn't matter, please, thank you, etc. We also explored the alphabet in sign language, and we each worked to be able to sign our names so that we could greet someone by signing "Hello, My name is [name]." On Thursday, a student's mom came in and read a book to us in sign language along with her kiddo and answered lots of great, curious questions from these 1st grade thinkers!

Phonics Success! Your student is bringing home their 1st of 4 total books this year of our 95 Phonics program. They are also bringing home the assessment that corresponds to the 7 weekly lessons in the first book. I am so proud of their letter and sound growth. They are stretching out words! They are "chipping" words (ask them what this is!). They are decoding words to answer questions about what they are reading! All great things! If you have any questions about the book or the assessment, please reach out. I should also note that there are times we skip certain sections or just do a portion of a section. So, if you see a blank part in the workbook, please know that it means we did not do it vs. just your child not doing it during our learning time.

Pictures: These are coming home today. I personally put them in everyone's backpack that ordered them so that they are nested safely in their folders. Please be on the look out for these to get them safely out of backpacks!

I'll save the rest of my comments for captions to the tons of pictures below. It was, overall, a GREAT week of learning and SUPER FUN too!

Thanks and have a nice long weekend,

Wendy

A parent mystery reader on Monday!

Lots of great questions!

In math this week, we focused largely on nonstandard units of measuring. In the following pictures, you can see students measuring their shoes, books, bins, etc. with snap cubes and popsicle sticks. We learned the importance of lining up the cubes and popsicle sticks so that they touch end to end. We also started to see how the snap cube "length" total was more than the popsicle "length" total when measuring items. Lots of great conversations and discoveries!

Cardboard Challenge! We created on Tuesday and then enjoying playing each others' games and exploring others' creations on Wednesday. Thanks to those that brought in tape! We used it!

LOTS of great collaboration and cooperation!

On to Thursday morning and making applesauce!

Everyone got to help! Don't worry, I handled the cutting.

Mrs. Wheeler happened to come in right as it was ready to go in the crock pot. What a special group picture!

One student's parent came in to teach us signs. This shows a student reading a book and the parent teaching us how to sign the book. The gentleman in the picture is Mr. Clayton who was the ASL interpreter for our time together.

This is the sign for apple - we of course learned how to sign applesauce today! Ask your kiddo if they remember!

Apple taste testing time. THANKS for sending in red, green and yellow apples to taste test. PLUS, we had extras that we used for the applesauce! YAY!

Ms. Karla continues to come in and help us Wed - Fri afternoons

Everyone was here today, so we got a class picture with Miss Karla for her to have forever!
