Sept 29 Update

Hello!

What a busy week! We had a great week with a grand finale FUN time at the Hopewell Hawk Hike today!

Some info to share:

Here is the link for Hopewell spirit wear if you are interested in ordering.

We welcomed 2 new interns/volunteers to our room this week! YAY! Mrs. Grimm is a children's librarian with a love for learning and working for kids, and she will be here on Tuesday mornings with me volunteering in some small group in-classroom support and/or working with the class to allow me more time for some small group work. So, you may start to hear her name. Also, Miss Karla is a Dublin Teacher Academy (DTA) intern here with us on Wed, Thurs and Fri afternoons for 6 weeks. The DTA program is housed at Emerald Campus for juniors and seniors interested in exploring the teaching profession. They do rotations in both elementary and middle school. The kids already are connecting with her after week 1 and enjoying having her help in our classroom!

And now it's time for YOU to consider coming and joining our learning fun! : ) Please click here if you'd like to come and read to the class, volunteer or share something with us from your culture, work or life experience! I'm happy to chat with you about ideas and/or provide picture book suggestions (which I'd have here in the class for you) if you'd prefer to come in and read to the class.

Conferences are quickly approaching. Please click here if you haven't yet signed up for a conference time.

Curious how to support your student at home with learning? Here's my top 6 thoughts! : )

1) Read with your child! Life is busy - this would be my #1 top pick - that you sit and enjoy a good book with your child. Talk about the story, what happens, what they think about it, etc.

2) Notice words and math in our world when you are out and about. Look for simple ways to incorporate reading and math in your conversations.

3) ST Math is a district-wide math program that students can access at home through clever.com. Please click here for more log in information if needed.

4) Lexia is a literacy program differentiated to your child's literacy needs. I sent home Lexia username and passwords with students on Thursday for anyone interested in doing Lexia at home. Please reach out if that paper didn't make it to you and you need your child's login information.

5) Home Reading Bag: "Just right books" and activities will be coming home in each student's reading ziploc bag beginning the week of 10/9

6) Talk, talk, talk! Look at the pictures in the weekly update blog with your child to help get them talking and sharing about what they are doing and learning at school to spawn conversations and ideas for at home learning to support our topics we are studying.

And now for some pictures!
Have a great weekend,
Wendy
Our first time as a class playing bingo! Here we are playing "zones of regulation" bingo to identify what zones the situations were showing and then placing the chip and hoping for a bingo.

On Bring A Toy day, one student brought shark items to pose with for pictures! : )

Here we are sharing our names and "favorites" with Miss Karla, our new DTA senior intern. The kids are SO EXCITED to have her in our room!!

We have added a new "think sheet" as we focused this week on story retelling. These are examples where students read a book during independent reading and then fill out a "think sheet" listing the beginning, middle and end of the book. We often share these out at the end of our reading time. As you can see from these examples, some choose to put their thinking in pictures, some choose words and some choose a combination. It's ALL great thinking - and readers are thinkers! Great work on this retelling focus this week!!

Retelling activity based on the book Giraffes Can't Dance.

Indoor recess day. Thought it might be fun to browse the next few pictures to see what your child chooses to do during indoor recess time.

These 4 had a fabulously fun game of Headbands going that was making me chuckle overhearing their conversation.

Time to depart for the Hopewell Hawk Hike!

Station 1: Freeze Tag
Station 2: Duck, Duck, Hawk!

Station 3: Tug of War

Station 4: Hula Hoop Games

A great hike over to the park with some great activities and heading back!
