Sept 22 Update

Hello!

My goodness, this week flew by! Most importantly, in the minds of the kids, we are having another gem jar celebration tomorrow (Friday, 9/22). It will be TOY DAY! Students can bring in 1 toy or stuffed animal that will fit in their backpack. Please remind them that whatever they bring, they need to be willing to play and share it with their friends during our morning explore time. It is not best to bring in a toy that is so coveted and special that the child doesn't want anyone to touch it or play with it.

Next week is our Hopewell Hike Week! Please see the flyer sent home with the students! ***Please sign and return the bottom portion as it is the permission slip to walk to Ferris-Wright Park next door to Hopewell for our hike next Friday!!

Each day next week has a theme for spirit week, and then on Friday, we will hike to the park for some fun activities! This is the PTO's annual and only fundraiser for the year! Please consider giving to this important fundraiser as it funds so many varied events throughout the year for our students!! Our goal is to have all students registered ONLINE! Help us reach our goal! Click the link in the flyer pdf here to register: PTO Hawk Hike Fundraiser Registration Flyer - Email.pdf

Finally, conferences are approaching. Here is the sign up with information and the dates. I look forward to chatting with you about your students soon!

Thanks,

Wendy

The kids are practicing a turn and learn here for partner sharing. One quick way to decide "who goes first" if they both want to go first is to do Rock, Paper, Scissors. You can see some of them are trying that strategy in the picture above.

The goal is to get kids thinking and talking as much as possible, even during our whole group learning. To that end, we do a lot of "Turn and Learn" partner time where everyone gets to share their thinking and then we come back together for a few to share before we move on. Here is the poster that guides are Turn and Learn process. Ask your kiddo: Did you Turn and Learn with someone today? Who was your partner? What did they share with you? This process is excellent for getting everyone's voice heard and also for working on listening skills!

10 Frame Pop Its were a big kit for the first time we used them this year for a quick math opener called "build it" - where students see a number on the screen (in tallies, fingers, symbols, dice, etc) and have to subitize and build the number on their 10 frame quickly.

The treasure chest! Used right now at the end of the day. Ask them what the "Lucky Item" is and how they can increase their chances of getting it to get a treasure chest prize!

Our math focus this week has been on Part + Part = Whole. Here, we are enjoying finger bowling as we work on all of the combinations that can make 10.
